The Deadliest day on american soil

General Lee and General McClellan amassed a total of 8 Corps onto a concentrated battlefield in Sharpsburg, Maryland on 17 September 1862 in what became America's bloodiest one day battle on American soil. Colonel Kelly Alexander USMC (retired) and Major Fred Galvin USMC (retired) provide a study from the battlefield of the leadership decisions, tactical unit actions and outcome of this battle. The significance of the Battle of Antietam is that it led President Lincoln to soon after issue his Emancipation Proclamation among other major evolutions such as newspapers correspondents showing the graphic nature and savagery of the fighting which significantly impacted newspaper readers, especially in major northeastern cities.
